X Challenges India's Use of IT Act for Content Blocking

X, formerly Twitter, has filed a lawsuit against the Indian government, challenging the use of Section 79(3)(b) of the IT Act to block content. The company argues that this provision is being misused to bypass the safeguards of Section 69A, which requires a structured process for content blocking. X claims that the government's actions create an unlawful parallel censorship regime, violating the Supreme Court's Shreya Singhal judgment. The company seeks protection for its employees and challenges the government's use of the Sahyog portal, which it labels as a "censorship portal." This legal battle highlights concerns over arbitrary censorship and the need for transparency in content moderation.
