A Playful Plea: Jay Kotak Urges Zerodha to Avoid Banking Disruption

At the Global Investors Meet 2025 in Bengaluru, Jay Kotak, co-head of Kotak 811, jokingly remarked to Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath, "You've already disrupted the broking business, please don't come after us." Kamath responded, "We won't get a licence even if we wanted," highlighting regulatory barriers in the banking sector. The exchange underscores the fintech industry's growing influence and traditional banks' concerns. Zerodha, founded in 2010, revolutionized stock trading with its low-cost model, attracting over 1.6 crore users. In FY24, Zerodha reported an 89% increase in net profit to ₹5,496 crore. The discussion also touched on gaps in India's financial system and the need for improved customer experience in banking.
