AI to Clean Delhi’s Water: Jal Board Partners with IIT Kanpur for Smart Monitoring

Delhi’s water network gets a tech-powered upgrade  
In a first-of-its-kind collaboration, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has partnered with IIT Kanpur’s Airawat Research Foundation to modernize the capital’s water management system using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Digital Twin technology. The agreement, signed in November 2025, aims to transform Delhi’s ageing water infrastructure into a smart, responsive network.

The AI-powered system will monitor pipeline pressure, detect leaks before they escalate, and optimize water treatment processes. Residents can expect quicker complaint redressal and improved water quality. Officials say the initiative will shift DJB’s operations from reactive to proactive, reducing wastage and enhancing service delivery.

The project also includes real-time monitoring of treatment plants and an AI-based revenue management system to streamline billing and reduce losses.
