AI vs. Artists: The Battle for Creative Rights Intensifies

In a historic court ruling, U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff has ordered OpenAI to answer charges from The Intercept, which alleges the firm abused its news stories to train ChatGPT without permission. The judge concluded that The Intercept had made a plausible case for harm based on OpenAI's stripping of copyright management information from its stories, and allowed that portion of the suit to move forward. Charges against Microsoft, OpenAI's financial supporter, were dismissed.

 

At the same time, Nobel prize winner Sir Kazuo Ishiguro and other leading writers have strongly opposed mooted relaxations in UK copyright legislation. According to them, the relaxation would disproportionately benefit giant tech companies so that they could take advantage of creative work without reasonable compensation to the creators. Ishiguro points out that the mooted 'opt-out' system does not work and calls upon the government to rethink its stance so that creative works are not exploited by tech giants.

 

These developments underscore the escalating global discourse on the ethical and legal implications of using copyrighted material in AI training processes.
