Astronomers Unveil First 3D Map of Milky Way Interstellar Dust Properties

Astronomers have created the first detailed 3D map of interstellar dust properties in the Milky Way. Led by Xiangyu Zhang and Gregory Green, this breakthrough uses data from the Gaia mission and China's LAMOST telescope to analyze 130 million star spectra. The map reveals correlations between dust, star formation, and the galaxy's structure, providing critical insights for astrochemistry and galactic evolution. It also challenges previous assumptions about dust behavior in intermediate-density regions, suggesting new mechanisms for organic matter growth.
