India’s auto industry is on the brink of a production standstill as Chinese export restrictions on rare earth magnets threaten to choke vital supply chains, according to a recent industry document.

China, which controls over 90% of global rare earth magnet processing, imposed new export regulations in April, requiring import permits and end-use certificates for shipments. This has led to severe delays and bottlenecks at Chinese ports, with magnets essential for both electric and conventional vehicles now in short supply.

The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) warned the government that parts manufacturers could exhaust their inventories by the end of May, potentially bringing production in the world’s third-largest auto market to a halt by early June.

Rare earth magnets are critical for electric vehicle motors, as well as for power windows, audio systems, and other components in traditional cars. Even a single missing component can halt entire vehicle assembly lines.

The Indian auto industry, including major players like Maruti Suzuki, Mahindra & Mahindra, and Tata Motors, has urged the government to intervene with Beijing and expedite the release of magnets held up at Chinese ports since April 4.

The new import process is cumbersome, requiring verification by Indian ministries and the Chinese embassy, and then approval from Beijing—a process that industry leaders say must be urgently streamlined.

While some exports have resumed following the issuance of end-use permits by Indian authorities, industry executives remain concerned about ongoing delays and the risk of further disruptions.

The crisis has prompted calls for India to accelerate efforts toward self-reliance in rare earth processing and to explore alternative supply sources, as the current dependency on China exposes a major vulnerability in the country’s automotive ambitions.
