Bengaluru Dad’s Solution Becomes Digital Lifeline For Regional Language Typing Across India

Krishna Permi wanted to help his child practice Kannada but found existing tools like Google Input clunky and dependent on internet access. Typing Kannada digitally was difficult, prompting him to design a more user-friendly solution. 

Birth Of Akshar

Initially, Permi wrapped Google Input Tools into a native iPhone app for personal use. Over time, he realized privacy concerns since queries were sent to external servers. He then rebuilt the app to run fully offline and on-device, ensuring no data collection. 

Expansion To 21 Languages

Akshar now supports 21 Indian languages, including Kannada, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Marathi, and Malayalam. It allows seamless typing across devices, making it easier for students, professionals, and everyday users to communicate in their native tongues. 

Privacy And Accessibility

Unlike many third-party keyboards, Akshar does not require “full access” or internet connectivity. This makes it a secure and private alternative, especially important since keyboards log every character typed.

Akshar empowers users to write emails, social media posts, and documents in regional languages, promoting linguistic diversity and inclusivity in India’s digital ecosystem. It highlights how grassroots innovation can bridge accessibility gaps.
