Defence Minister Rajnath Singh today inaugurated a transformative chapter in India's rail infrastructure by laying the foundation stone for a state-of-the-art rail and metro coach manufacturing plant in Madhya Pradesh’s Raisen district. The new facility—developed by Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML)—marks a pivotal stride towards self-reliant, globally competitive railway production, reinforcing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ vision and promising major industrial, economic, and social benefits across central India.
In a high-profile ceremony at Umaria village near Obedullaganj, attended by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, and other dignitaries, Rajnath Singh presided over the launch of the BRAHMA (BEML Rail Hub for Manufacturing) Project. Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw participated virtually. The initiative carries an investment of Rs 1,800 crore and is strategically designed to position Madhya Pradesh as a new hub for advanced train and metro coach manufacturing, targeting domestic supply and global export markets.
Key Highlights and Features
The BRAHMA project will occupy over 148 acres in Raisen district, with state-of-the-art facilities for the production, assembly, and testing of Vande Bharat, Amrit Bharat, and metro rail coaches.
Expected direct and indirect employment generation exceeds 5,000 jobs, with special focus on opportunities for technical graduates and youth from Raisen, Sehore, Vidisha, and Bhopal.
The plant’s inaugural phase aims to roll out its first coach within 18 months, with an initial production capacity of 125-200 coaches per year, scalable to over 1,100 units in the coming years.
Plans for a dedicated rail coach technology institute are under consideration to provide skill development and technical training, anchoring talent development in the region.
Ancillary units are set to flourish in Raisen and Bhopal, manufacturing bogies, interiors, air-conditioning systems, and other essential rail components, supporting local industries and MSMEs.
Socio-economic, Industrial, and Infrastructure Impact
The new coach factory is expected to catalyze broad-based growth in Madhya Pradesh:
By localizing advanced coach manufacturing, the unit reduces reliance on imports and elevates India’s rail export potential, enhancing foreign currency earnings.
The project is expected to spark the development of satellite industries, boosting entrepreneurship in allied sectors, including engineering, electronics, fabrication, and logistics.
Renewable energy will power the plant’s operations, with a 2,000 MVA capacity designed for sustainability and green manufacturing, in sync with national climate objectives.
Skill development and employment generated by the project will directly benefit the region’s large technical student base, providing a pipeline for future industrial workforce needs.
Statements from Leaders
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh lauded the inauguration as a landmark for Atmanirbhar Bharat, highlighting Madhya Pradesh’s growing industrial capacity and BEML’s pioneering engineering legacy.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav described the event as a proud moment for the state, emphasizing the government’s support for new schools, colleges, and extensive regional development.
Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan cited the move as historic for local youth and a major leap in self-reliant industrialization.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, addressing virtually, confirmed that the new facility would play a vital role in Indian Railways’ target to roll out 500 new Vande Bharat trains by 2030, and further the expansion of metro services in tier-2 cities.
Looking Ahead
The BRAHMA project not only cements Madhya Pradesh’s position on India’s industrial map but also aligns with the broader national vision for innovation-led, export-oriented infrastructure growth. As the plant advances towards operational launch over the next 18 months, local communities, aspiring engineers, and allied sectors are set to reap the dividends of this mega initiative.
