Cap-tain Chill: Capgemini CEO Says 'Nah' to Weekend Work Woes

 

In the midst of the current debate on optimum work hours, Capgemini India CEO Ashwin Yardi has floated a middle path proposal, supporting a 47.5-hour workweek. Addressing the Nasscom Technology and Leadership Forum, Yardi made a suggestion of "nine hours a day and five days a week" as the best work duration. He advocated keeping employees' personal time sacred by not sending them emails over weekends unless absolutely necessary. This position strongly contrasts with other recent proposals of longer hours such as Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy's suggestion of 70 hours and L&T Chairman S.N. Subrahmanyan's 90-hour suggestion. Yardi's strategy is driven by productivity and work-life balance, and demonstrates a change of heart among corporate leadership in values towards employees.
