Cherries on Track: J&K’s First Parcel Train to Mumbai Signals New Era for Fruit Growers

Jammu & Kashmir celebrated a historic milestone as the first-ever parcel train loaded with 24 tonnes of fresh cherries departed from Katra station to Mumbai’s Bandra Terminus.

The train, advanced from its original June 3 schedule, will reach Mumbai within 30 hours, ensuring the cherries arrive fresh and reducing the risk of spoilage.

This project, undertaken by Northern Railway's Jammu division, is a result of joint efforts from railway officials, fruit growers, and the horticulture department.

Game Changer for Growers

Kashmir fruit growers have traditionally struggled to get their delicate produce transported, have in the past relied on expensive air freight or long road trips.

The new train service provides a quicker, cheaper option, reducing travel time and transport costs.

Cherries were transported by truck from Kashmir orchards to Katra prior to loading onto the train, representing a considerable improvement in logistics.

Economic Impact

The initiative is likely to increase the region's horticulture industry by opening up access to main markets and enhancing returns for thousands of agric farming families.

Two additional consignments of cherries are planned from Katra and Jammu over the next few days, pointing to high demand and the possibility of regular services during the cherry season.

Future plans

Growers, who were all smiles after the breakthrough, however, continue to push for the opening of a direct rail route to the Kashmir Valley so that produce can be loaded nearer the orchards and still further simplify the supply chain.

The highly-awaited inauguration of the Katra-Srinagar rail link was delayed due to weather, with farmers waiting for a new date to arrive.
