Chess Prodigy's Plot Twist: Carlsen Forfeits Crown, Eyes New Conquests

World number one chess player Magnus Carlsen, the reigning world champion, has conclusively ended any chance of his return to the classical world championship. Though he affirms staying better than the new generation of players, Carlsen blames his return rejection primarily on a lack of motivation. Norwegian grandmaster Carlsen, who lost his world champion title in 2023, justified his contentment with his current activities on other chess projects like the Freestyle Grand Slam and the Esports World Cup.

 

Carlsen's absence in the classical world championship has made way for new champions like Ding Liren and Gukesh Dommaraju. However, the chess maestro is not quite convinced about giving away his title, stating, "I really enjoy playing now and believe I am still fairly competent." While not keeping the door closed to mentoring in the future, Carlsen's immediate desire is to demonstrate he's "still better than the young players" in the next tournaments.
