Debugging the Service Trap: Can India’s IT Sector Reprogram Its Future

India's information technology sector has cleverly used the service-based model in the past but has struggled under global economic constraints in addition to the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence (AI). In FY 2023-24, the top TCS, Infosys, and Wipro reportedly saw 64,000 of their employees exit in line with the somewhat cautious tech expenditure and hiring. C Vijayakumar, the CEO of HCLTech, maintains the need for an overhaul of business operations and proprietary language model development for the legacy industry to keep up with innovations in the competitive landscape driven by AI. Similarly, Infosys chairman Nandan Nilekani anticipates a shift toward self-built AI models rather than reliance on broad architectures. This points to a need for the Indian IT sector to go beyond conventional services if it is to retain its global standing.
