Delhi Airport's 'Slot Banks' Strategy: Turning IGI into a Global Aviation Hub
The Delhi Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport is adopting a new "slot banks" system to enhance its position as a global aviation hub. The move is aimed at enhancing flight timing coordination and making connections faster for passengers.
Major points:
DIAL aims to raise international-to-international (I-to-I) traffic from 3% to 10% within five years
IGI presently accommodates 150 destinations (81 domestic, 69 international)
The airport operates more weekly European flights (204) than Singapore (200)
Expansion plans consist of increased capacity and optimized connectivity with arrival and departure banks
Planned 29% hike in domestic and 28% increase in international landing fees, with incentives for new long-haul routes
DIAL CEO Videh Kumar Jaipuriar said, "For the growth of the hub, Delhi airport is also increasing capacity, such as adding arrival and departure banks to maximize connections."
The move is according to the government's vision to make Delhi a leading international aviation hub in two years' time.
