Delhi Gears Up for Fossil Fuel Ban: Two-Wheelers and CNG Autos to Go Electric

In a bold move to combat Delhi’s chronic air pollution, the city’s draft Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy 2.0 proposes sweeping bans on fossil fuel-powered vehicles. Starting August 15, 2026, petrol, diesel, and CNG two-wheelers will no longer be permitted on Delhi roads. Meanwhile, CNG auto-rickshaws face restrictions even sooner — from August 15, 2025, no new registrations or permit renewals will be allowed. Older CNG autos must be retrofitted with electric kits or replaced entirely.

The policy also aims at municipal fleets and public transport. Civic bodies' solid waste management vehicles have to switch to electric by December 31, 2027. Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and DIMTS buses will shift to electric models for intra-city operations, and inter-state operations will only be allowed with BS VI-emission compliant buses.

Even private car owners are affected; individuals who have two fossil fuel vehicles need to consider an EV while buying a third one. The forceful thrust towards electric is aimed at decreasing emissions and cleaner air in the capital city.

The policy has yet to go through the cabinet, but implementation risks were foreseen by experts, especially from cars registered in nearby NCR cities. Despite this, Delhi is on the cusp of a greener tomorrow.
