Delhi-NCR Braces For Chakka Jam As Drivers Protest Rising Fuel Prices

Commercial vehicle drivers across Delhi-NCR will observe a coordinated strike, also referred to as a “Chakka Jam,” beginning May 21. The unions argue that spiraling fuel costs and stagnant fare structures have left drivers struggling to sustain their livelihoods.

Reasons Behind The Strike

The unions highlighted that taxi and auto fares have remained unchanged for nearly 15 years, while fuel prices have surged repeatedly in recent weeks. On May 19, petrol prices in Delhi rose to ₹98.64 per litre and diesel to ₹91.58 per litre, marking the second hike in less than a week. CNG prices also increased by ₹1 per kg. 

Union Demands

• The Chaalak Shakti Union, along with other transport groups, has demanded:
• Immediate revision of taxi and auto fares in Delhi-NCR.
• Stronger policies to prevent economic exploitation of drivers.
• Government notification of revised fares within one to two weeks.
• Unions have warned that failure to act will escalate the protest into a larger movement. 

Impact On Commuters

The strike is expected to cause significant disruption in Delhi-NCR, affecting daily commuters, office-goers, and travelers. App-based cab services like Ola and Uber may see increased demand, though unions allege these platforms exploit drivers by arbitrarily setting fares. A protest rally is also planned at the Delhi Secretariat on May 23.
