Driving Change: Karnataka's Green Leap with 4,000 Electric Buses

In a landmark decision, the Karnataka Cabinet has approved the induction of 4,000 electric buses into state transport fleets under the Karnataka Electric Bus Programme. This initiative, supported by a ₹3,000-crore low-interest loan from the World Bank, aims to reduce air pollution, ease traffic congestion, and modernize public transportation.

The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC), Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), and Kalyana Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (KKRTC) will spearhead the rollout. BMTC, already a pioneer in electric buses since its 2017 pilot under the FAME-I scheme, plans to expand its fleet to meet growing commuter demand. Currently, BMTC operates over 1,000 electric buses, including models from Tata Motors, Switch Mobility, and JBM Group.

KSRTC, which runs 350 electric buses, is set to add 300 more by mid-2025, enhancing connectivity between Bengaluru and Mysuru. The programme formalizes the Preliminary Project Report (PPR) submitted via the Department of Economic Affairs portal in collaboration with the World Bank.

This green initiative underscores Karnataka's commitment to sustainability and innovation, paving the way for cleaner and more efficient public transport.
