Duty-Free Solar: The Game-Changing Move in Indo-US Trade Talks

The India Solar Manufacturing Association (ISMA) has called for the government to add solar cells and modules to the proposed India-US free trade agreement with a zero-duty framework. In a letter to the New and Renewable Energy Ministry, ISMA suggested making duty-free trade between the two nations available for solar components such as polysilicon, ingots, and wafers. The group also urged zero-duty import of US-origin capital goods and equipment involved in PV production as well as incentivizing US-based fabricators for setting up Indian manufacturing hubs. ISMA finds this to be a game-changer moment in India's industry and clean energy history that would make India one of the biggest solar manufacturers across the world.
