With MakeMyTrip's 25th anniversary, the ground-breaking online travel firm enters its next quarter-century with fearless aspiration. The firm's founders, Deep Kalra and Rajesh Magow, have remained positive about the company's prospects for surpassing growth in the industry through the strategic use of investment and artificial intelligence (AI). Looking back over the history of the firm and describing their hopes for the years ahead, they asserted that "the best is yet to come."
A Transformational Journey:
Founded in 2000, MakeMyTrip has revolutionized India's travel landscape through innovation and perseverance. From riding out the dot-com bubble burst to weathering the devastating impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the company has consistently transformed itself to meet adversity. Revenues dropped by 95% during the pandemic, but MakeMyTrip saw the crisis as a chance for rebirth. It introduced flexible booking policies, added homestay inventory, and introduced home-based travel franchises, empowering over 2,000 women entrepreneurs. By 2023, not only had it bounced back but emerged stronger, with record profits and a more streamlined operating structure.
The Role of AI in Driving Growth:
AI has become a cornerstone of MakeMyTrip's strategy as it attempts to redefine customer experiences and drive operational efficiency. Rajesh Magow referred to this shift as the company's "smartphone moment," citing AI's disruptive potential. The platform now utilizes AI-powered tools like chatbots, personalized itinerary recommendations, and dynamic pricing engines. Its corporate travel business, myBiz, uses AI for itinerary planning, serving over 64,000 active customers. Additionally, its intercity cab business, Savaari, has grown by nearly 54%, driven by improved highway infrastructure and changing consumer behavior.
Magow added that MakeMyTrip plans to double investment in AI to drive customer satisfaction and internal productivity. Those innovations are expected to drive the company to grow 1.5 times faster than the overall travel industry.
Horizon Beyond Borders - Domestic and International Markets:
While India is its home country, MakeMyTrip is also growing overseas in countries like the Middle East. Saudi Arabia is one of the identified growth markets. In the home market, the company is growing in categories like homestays and business travel while also enjoying growing disposable incomes and rising connectivity.
The airfare booking segment continues to be a major revenue earner, accounting for almost 35% of overall revenues with a 20% year-over-year growth. The hotel segment has also been a massive success, achieving a gross merchandise value of $1.5 billion by 2023.
Lessons of 25 Years:
Looking back at the historical success of the company, Magow credited three guiding philosophies: customer obsession, adaptive innovation, and inclusive growth. He stressed that being at the forefront of a rapidly growing market demands an ever-present watchfulness against complacency.
In the future, MakeMyTrip is optimistic about India's travel boom fueled by increasing incomes, demographic dividends and infrastructure growth. With more than 500 million smartphone users in India alone, the next 25 years promise even greater opportunities for growth.
A Vision for the Future:
As MakeMyTrip embarks on its next stage of expansion, it is open to leading the way once again through continued innovation. The firm will leverage its healthy cash balances to drive organic growth as well as strategic purchases. Recent developments include the acquisition of an expense management platform to bolster its corporate travel business. Deep Kalra encapsulated the future of the company in a nutshell: "The last 12 months have been our best ever. But we sincerely believe that the best is yet to come—not just for MakeMyTrip but for India's travel industry as a whole." With a well-defined agenda of AI-led innovation and strategic investments, MakeMyTrip will continue to be the leader of India's changing travel landscape.
