From Threatened to Thriving: Pallikaranai Marshland Attracts Thousands of Migratory Birds

The Pallikaranai marshland in Tamil Nadu is witnessing an incredible revival of biodiversity as more than 10,000 migratory birds from around 100 species throng the area. This has come after the removal of 52 encroachments last November, a significant effort led by the National Green Tribunal and local wildlife officials. The relocation of squatters to designated tenements has allowed the marshland to reclaim its natural habitat, creating a sanctuary for both migratory and local bird species. Some of the notable sightings include rare birds such as the Garganey, Northern Shoveler, and Western Marsh Harrier, drawn by the area's rich food supply and favorable conditions. Chennai birdwatchers are upbeat about the marshland's status as a premier birding destination, stressing its ecological significance and successful conservation efforts that rejuvenated this important wetland ecosystem.
