Rituals And Practices

Devotees wake up early, take a holy dip in the Ganga or other sacred rivers, and perform Arghya to the Sun and Lord Shiva. Offerings of flowers, lamps, Tulsi leaves, and sweets are made, along with chanting of Ganga Stotra. Charity, including food, clothes, and water donations, is considered highly meritorious.

Significance

According to legend, King Bhagirath’s penance brought Goddess Ganga to Earth to liberate his ancestors. Bathing in the Ganga on this day is believed to wash away ten types of sins (Dasha Paap), purify the soul, and grant peace, prosperity, and moksha. Even those unable to visit the river can mix a few drops of Gangajal in water at home for blessings.
