Ganga River Pollution Raises Concerns in Bihar, Officials Respond

Bihar Economic Survey 2024-25 unveiled a shocking truth: water in the Ganga river is not safe for bathing at many places in the state. There is excessive bacteriological pollution, mainly caused by the discharge of untreated sewage from city riversides, which has made the water unsafe. Although other parameters such as pH, dissolved oxygen, and BOD are within acceptable norms, total and fecal coliform bacteria concentrations far surpass safety norms. The Bihar State Pollution Control Board (BSPCB) is keeping an eye on 34 sites on the river and attempting to upgrade sewage treatment facilities. This pollution problem is taking place in principal towns along the Ganga and raises serious health and environmental concerns.
