Golden Spice, Global Prize: India's GI-Tagged Turmeric Conquers Export Markets

India's turmeric business is going through a golden era, with GI-tagged ones being at the forefront in overseas markets. As of 2025, India has six GI-tagged turmerics, namely the world-famous Lakadong and Erode. These distinct, region-based turmerics are assisting India in holding on to its 62% of international exports, as the nation sets a target for $1 billion worth of turmeric exports in 2030. Not only does the GI tag provide top dollar prices but also new markets for export in health-conscious geographies such as the US and EU. This strategic action is consolidating India's position as the global leader in turmeric production and export, while fostering sustainable agriculture and local economic development.
