Google, Amazon, Microsoft Bet Big On India’s AI Future With $67.5 Billion

On May 8, 2026, India announced major commitments from three global tech giants—Google, Amazon, and Microsoft—towards building AI capabilities. The investments, spread across 2026–2030, aim to position India as a central player in the global AI supply chain.

Investment Breakdown

Amazon: $35 billion by 2030, focusing on AI infrastructure, cloud services, and export expansion.

Microsoft: $17.5 billion between 2026–2029, dedicated to cloud data centers, AI infrastructure, and skilling programs.

Google: $15 billion to build a gigawatt-scale AI hub in Visakhapatnam, including three large data center campuses powered by clean energy. 

Structural Challenges

Despite the massive inflow, analysts warn that India’s lack of domestic semiconductor manufacturing, power and water supply constraints, and reliance on foreign-controlled systems could undermine the promise. Without addressing these gaps, India risks becoming a host for foreign AI ecosystems rather than developing indigenous capabilities. 

Strategic Significance

The government has accelerated policy measures to close these gaps, with Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighting India’s potential as a trusted supply chain partner in electronics manufacturing. The initiatives also align with India’s broader goals of digital sovereignty and global competitiveness.
