Government Moves Forward With Fifth-Generation Fighter Jet Project

India’s defence modernization strategy is entering a crucial phase as the Air Force faces squadron shortages against regional adversaries. The AMCA programme is designed to strengthen air superiority, reduce dependence on imports, and counter advanced fighters deployed by China and Pakistan.

Strategic Significance

The AMCA will be India’s first indigenous fifth-generation fighter, featuring stealth, supercruise, multirole combat capability, and advanced avionics. Around 125 aircraft are planned, with seven squadrons expected to be inducted by 2034–35.

Industry Participation

The Ministry of Defence has approved a competitive bidding model, inviting both public and private firms. HAL, L&T, BEL, and BEML are among the contenders for the ₹15,000 crore design and development phase. The selected partner will establish a dedicated facility for production.

India’s initiative aligns with global defence trends, as nations invest in next-generation fighters. The AMCA is seen as a strategic response to China’s J-20 and Pakistan’s J-10 fleets, ensuring India maintains technological parity in aerial warfare.
