Government Steps Up Tur Dal Procurement Amid Falling Mandi Prices

The Indian government plans to increase procurement of tur dal as mandi prices have fallen below the Minimum Support Price (MSP) of Rs 7,550 per quintal. This move comes after two years of elevated prices due to lower output. The government has sanctioned the purchase of 1.32 million tonnes of tur in the 2024-25 season under the Price Support Scheme. Agencies like Nafed and NCCF have already procured 12,335 tonnes of tur and have begun purchases in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and Maharashtra. The increased procurement aims to boost buffer stocks and provide farmers with remunerative prices. Retail tur prices are expected to fall in the coming weeks due to a bumper harvest forecast of over 4 million tonnes in the 2024-25 crop year.
