Government Order to Charitable Hospitals

The Maharashtra government has instructed the Maharashtra Medical Council to ensure doctors at charitable hospitals do not deny treatment to economically weaker patients under the Indigent Patients Fund scheme.

A government resolution has approved installation of a Special Inspection Team for monitoring adherence to the scheme.

A group of the officials representing charity commissioner office, medical education and drugs department, and Charitable Hospital Helpdesk will be constituted.

Strengthening Implementation Measures

Charitable hospitals will now be mandated to put up real-time information about available beds, available government health schemes, and other relevant information online and on dashboards.

Hospitals which refuse to go along with the scheme or decline to utilize the stipulated online system will be liable for action under the Maharashtra Public Trusts Act, 1950.

The Bombay High Court has issued orders mandating compliance with the seriousness of the provisions of the scheme.

Impact on Healthcare Accessibility

The order aims to bring an end to discrimination against poorer patients and grant them access to timely medical attention.

The government is also analyzing hospitals that were given land or concessions by state governments or municipal corporations to check for compliance with healthcare obligations.

The move will bring more transparency and accountability into the healthcare sector, benefiting thousands of poor patients.
