The inscription includes 11 forts in Maharashtra and 1 in Tamil Nadu (Gingee Fort)
These forts represent the military ingenuity, governance, and cultural pride of the Maratha Empire, spanning the 17th to 19th centuries CE
Notable forts include Raigad, Shivneri, Rajgad, Pratapgad, Lohgad, Suvarnadurg, Vijaydurg, Panhala, Sindhudurg, Salher, Khanderi, and Gingee

UNESCO Recognition Details

The decision was made during the 47th session of the World Heritage Committee in Paris, France
The nomination was submitted in January 2024 and underwent an 18-month evaluation by advisory bodies including ICOMOS
The sites were recognized under criteria (iv) and (vi) for their architectural brilliance and historical significance

“When we speak of the glorious Maratha Empire, we associate it with good governance, military strength, cultural pride and emphasis on social welfare. The great rulers inspire us with their refusal to bow to any injustice,” PM Modi posted on X.
