India Hits Refresh: ‘Google Tax’ Deleted, Big Tech Reboots

India will abolish its 6% equalisation levy, commonly referred to as the 'Google tax,' from April 1, 2025. The tax was levied on foreign technology giants such as Google, Meta, and Amazon for digital ad revenue generated in India. The move is part of the amendments to the Finance Bill with an objective to reduce trade tensions with the United States and prevent retaliatory tariffs threatened by President Donald Trump. The move is part of wider efforts to increase bilateral trade ties, with both countries looking to achieve $500 billion in bilateral trade by 2030.

Though the abolition is not expected to result in substantial revenue benefits for Big Tech, it lessens compliance costs and declares a moral triumph for the firms. Indian advertisers can enjoy lower digital advertising prices, promoting development in the digital economy. This is considered by experts as a strategic move to settle global tax controversies and rationalize India's taxation policies.

The move is a sign of India's transition towards globally accepted digital taxation frameworks, after similar abolition of taxes on non-resident e-commerce companies. It is a reflection of New Delhi's commitment to balancing economic diplomacy with domestic business interests and strengthening its digital ecosystem.
