India Hooks No. 2 Spot: Fish Production Soars

India has secured its position as the world's second-largest fish producer, contributing approximately 8% to global fish production. The country's fish production has seen a remarkable increase, reaching a record 184 lakh tons annually in 2023-24, nearly doubling from 95.7 lakh tons in 2013-14. This achievement is attributed to strong government support through initiatives like the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) and technological advancements in the sector. India also leads globally in shrimp production and ranks third in capture fisheries. The fisheries sector now plays a crucial role in India's economy, supporting the livelihoods of over 28 million people and contributing significantly to export earnings.
