India Makes Energy Storage Mandatory in Solar Projects to Improve Grid Reliability

To improve grid reliability, India's Ministry of Power has made the use of energy storage systems compulsory with solar projects. Renewable energy implementing agencies and state utilities have to include at least a two-hour co-located energy storage system, representing 10% of the solar capacity installed, in upcoming solar tenders. This program will help offset intermittency challenges and support crucial relief at peak demand hours. The government anticipates this requirement to lead to around 14 GW/28 GWh of storage capacity by 2030 in support of India's ambitious 500 GW renewable energy capacity goal. The order also invites distribution licensees to extend similar storage needs to rooftop solar systems.
