Indian Steel Industry Gears Up for Battle: Antidumping Petition Against Chinese Imports Imminent

Indian Alloy Steel Producers Association plans to lodge an antidumping case against cheaply priced Chinese imports of steel, an executive disclosed. The plan is launched when the Indian steel industry struggles against an upswing in imports from China. The latest statistics indicate that Chinese steel imports increased by 80% to 16.1 lakh tonnes in the period between January and July 2024, compared to the same seven months in 2023. The petition is intended to shield local manufacturers from unfair trade practices and market disruption. The move comes on the heels of repeated demands from the industry for higher tariffs and protectionist measures to balance the trade and promote domestic manufacturers.
