The surge in digital payments, UPI transactions and mobile banking has expanded both opportunity and attack surface. Cybercriminals are using generative AI to craft phishing messages that mimic bank communication styles and regional languages, making fraud harder for customers to spot. Synthetic voices can now convincingly impersonate relationship managers or senior executives over phone calls and WhatsApp audio. Attackers are also leveraging AI to probe systems at scale, identify weaknesses and automate credential stuffing attempts.

Leading private and public sector banks are investing heavily in AI based fraud detection systems that monitor transactions in real time and flag anomalies within seconds.
