Instant Refunds And Faster Bookings: Indian Railways Unveils Biggest Ticketing Change In Decades

On May 7, 2026, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that Indian Railways will transition to a new reservation system this August. The upgrade aims to enhance passenger convenience, reduce server load, and handle rising ticketing demand more efficiently.

Why The Change Matters

The existing PRS, introduced in 1986, has undergone only incremental updates over four decades. With nearly 9.3 lakh tickets booked daily, the system faces immense pressure. The new platform will leverage AI and data analytics to improve accuracy and speed, ensuring smoother travel planning for millions.

Key Features Of The New System

The revamped reservation system will allow instant refunds upon ticket cancellation, compared to the current 2–7 day wait. It will also feature AI-driven waitlist predictions with 94% accuracy, up from 53%, helping passengers make informed decisions. Capacity will expand to 2.25 lakh tickets per minute, compared to the current 25,000.

Digital Integration

The RailOne app, launched in 2025, will be central to the new ecosystem. It integrates booking, cancellations, refunds, live train tracking, platform information, and grievance redressal. Passengers can even order food for delivery to their seats, making it a one-stop solution for railway services.
