Lost in Translation: Assam CM's Hindi Hype Sparks Nationwide Linguistic Limbo

Assamese Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made a controversial statement calling Hindi "the language of the heart of every Indian". This was said at a cultural programme in Guwahati while Sarma was underlining the role of Hindi in promoting unity of the nation. The statement has since generated a heated debate all over the country, especially in regional non-Hindi imposition states, where people have raised their voice against Hindi being imposed as a language. Opposition leaders have called the statement "insensitive" towards India's linguistic diversity. The Chief Minister's office soon elaborated that the statement was to suggest that Hindi served as a link language and in no way did that take away the significance of regional languages.
