Mauritius Matters: Strengthening India’s Ties in the Indian Ocean Region

India has reiterated Mauritius' strategic location to its Indian Ocean policy, upgrading relations to an Enhanced Strategic Partnership during the recent PM Modi visit. The partnership focuses on maritime security, defense cooperation, and economic growth, including the donation of constructing Mauritius' new Parliament building. Key agreements signed include the setting up of a National Maritime Information Sharing Center and Police Academy and strengthening Mauritius' Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) security.

India also extended a ₹487 crore rupee-denominated line of credit for water infrastructure sector schemes and MoUs to boost trade, prevent money laundering, and promote MSMEs. Vision MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions) reaffirms Mauritius as a key bridge between India and the Global South.

With shared cultural affinities and close economic links, Mauritius remains a precious ally in India's pursuit of regional prosperity and stability.
