MERC Powers Tata’s Vision: Mumbai Gets 100 MW Energy Storage Upgrade

Tata Power, India's largest integrated power company, has got the go-ahead from the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) to set up a state-of-the-art 100 MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Mumbai. The ambitious initiative will improve grid reliability, provide backup to critical infrastructure, and streamline energy management in the city. The system will be implemented at ten locations strategically spread across the city in the next two years, with completion scheduled for 2027.Strategic Deployment: The BESS will be installed across ten key locations near load centers in Mumbai, ensuring efficient energy distribution and management.

Critical Infrastructure Support: Equipped with advanced "black start" functionality, the system will enable rapid power restoration to essential services such as hospitals, metro stations, airports, and data centers during grid disturbances.
Grid Resilience: The project aims to prevent large-scale blackouts and bolster Mumbai’s power network resilience through islanding capabilities.
Peak Load Management: The system will be able to stabilize the power supply during peak demand hours due to high ramp-rate capacity, providing balanced and reliable power distribution.
Cost Optimization: By saving energy during off-peak hours when costs are low and releasing it during high-cost peak hours, the BESS will save power purchase costs, potentially decreasing consumer tariffs in the future.
Renewable Energy Integration: The system will be used to store excess solar energy during the day and provide it during peak times, encouraging the use of renewable energy and sustainability objectives.
Advanced Safety Features: Tata Power aims to add three layers of temperature monitoring and fire suppression systems at cell, module, and rack levels to guarantee operational safety.
Centralized Control: The whole setup will be monitored centrally by Tata Power's Power System Control Center for better operating efficiency.
Future Expansion: There are plans for the integration of the BESS into the Distributed Energy Resource Management System (DERMS) for optimized efficiency and load management.
