Mobility Makeover: Indian Army's T-72s Tanks Flex New Russian Muscle

The Indian Defence Ministry and Rosoboronexport are reported to have signed a $248 million deal for the procurement of 1,000 HP engines for its T-72 tanks on March 7, 2025. Included in the deal is the transfer of technology to Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited in Chennai for local production. The new upgrade will replace the current 780 HP engines, improving both the battlefield mobility and offensive capability of the tank fleet of the Indian Army. The deal indeed proves very supportive to the "Make in India" initiative in defence. The new engines will be supplied in all fully formed, completely knocked down, and semi-knocked down conditions, making India self-reliant in defence manufacturing.
