Mumbai's BMC Demands ₹550 Crore Property Tax from MMRDA Contractor

In a significant financial dispute, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has formally requested the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to settle overdue property taxes exceeding ₹550 crore owed by its contractor, J. Kumar Infraprojects Limited. The BMC claims that despite multiple follow-ups, the contractor insists that tax liability falls on the MMRDA due to contractual clauses. This situation raises questions about accountability and financial management in ongoing metro projects, as the BMC aims to meet its annual property tax target of ₹6,200 crore amid rising defaulters.
