Jallosh for the Planet: Juhu Beach Cleanup Sets the Stage for Mumbai Climate Week
Mumbai’s shoreline witnessed a wave of environmental activism as 400 volunteers gathered at Juhu Beach on October 29, 2025, to remove 1,946 kg of plastic waste. The effort was part of the “Jallosh: Clean Coasts, Restore the Shore” initiative, organized by Project Mumbai, in collaboration with UNICEF India, YuWaah’s Green Rising, and supported by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Maharashtra’s State Climate Action Cell.
Key Highlights from the Cleanup Drive:
Massive Volunteer Turnout
Citizens of all ages—including youth, children, and senior residents—participated in the early morning cleanup.
The event showcased community-led climate action and civic responsibility.
Plastic Waste Collection & Recycling
Volunteers collected 1,946 kg of plastic, which will be recycled into public amenities like benches and bins.
The initiative ensures zero landfill contribution, promoting circular economy practices.
Symbolic Timing
The cleanup was strategically held post-Diwali, a time when beaches often accumulate festival-related waste.
It also served as a curtain-raiser for Mumbai Climate Week, scheduled for February 2026, aiming to position Mumbai as a climate collaboration hub for the Global South.
Government & NGO Collaboration
The event was backed by Maharashtra’s Department of Environment and Climate Change, reinforcing public-private partnerships in environmental stewardship.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced the Climate Week initiative, emphasizing Mumbai’s leadership in climate resilience.
Behavioral Change & Awareness
Organizers emphasized the importance of citizen engagement in tackling pollution.
The drive aimed to inspire long-term behavioral shifts toward sustainability and responsible waste management.
This large-scale cleanup not only rejuvenated one of Mumbai’s most iconic beaches but also set a precedent for grassroots climate action. As the city gears up for Climate Week, such efforts highlight the power of collective action in shaping a cleaner, greener future.
