Nandan Nilekani Predicts Energy as India's Next 'UPI-Style' Revolution

Infosys co-founder and Aadhaar architect Nandan Nilekani has envisioned a groundbreaking transformation in India’s energy sector, likening it to the success of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI). Speaking at the Arkam Annual Meet 2025, Nilekani predicted that rooftop solar panels and EV batteries will turn homes into energy producers, storers, buyers, and sellers. This decentralized model, powered by a Digital Energy Grid (DEG), could enable seamless peer-to-peer energy trading akin to UPI transactions.

 

Nilekani emphasized that this revolution will create millions of micro-energy entrepreneurs, fostering economic growth and innovation. With India already leading in digital infrastructure, this vision could redefine the nation’s energy ecosystem.
