Nationwide Mock Drills to Strengthen Civil Defence Preparedness

India is set to conduct a large-scale civil defence mock drill on May 7, focusing on public response to air raid sirens, first-aid preparedness, and evacuation strategies. The exercise, organized by the Ministry of Home Affairs, aims to enhance readiness in 244 designated Civil Defence districts across the country. Officials emphasize that the drill is not a cause for alarm but a proactive measure to ensure citizens are equipped to handle emergency situations.  

Essential Measures  
- Air Raid Sirens Activation: Sirens will be tested in various locations to familiarize civilians with emergency alerts and response protocols.  
- Blackout Simulations: Select areas will experience controlled power outages to assess preparedness for potential disruptions.  
- First-Aid Training: Citizens will be encouraged to keep essential supplies such as first-aid kits, torches, and cash reserves in case of digital payment failures.  
- Evacuation Rehearsals: Authorities will conduct drills to refine evacuation plans, ensuring swift and organized responses in high-risk zones.  
- Civil Defence Coordination: The exercise will involve Civil Defence wardens, Home Guards, National Cadet Corps (NCC), and student volunteers to strengthen community-level preparedness.  

Officials stress that the drill is part of a broader initiative to upgrade civil defence infrastructure and improve coordination between emergency response teams. The last such nationwide exercise was conducted in 1971, underscoring the significance of this renewed focus on civilian safety.
