Nature's Light Show: The Total Lunar Eclipse Unfolds
On March 13-14, 2025, a breathtaking total lunar eclipse will turn the Moon red, making it a "Blood Moon" for about 65 minutes. It happens because Earth's atmosphere scatters blue light, causing only red and orange wavelengths of light to reach the Moon, a phenomenon called Rayleigh scattering. The eclipse falls on the Holi festival, giving this astronomical event a special cultural twist.
The Moon will be completely within the shadow of Earth, producing a dark red color that can be seen over much of the planet, especially in the Americas. In contrast to solar eclipses, lunar eclipses are safe to observe without an eye filter. The eclipse will also present chances to identify planets such as Jupiter and Mars in the nighttime sky.
