If you’ve ever wondered who opened the doors to space for India, it’s Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma. His journey is full of inspiring moments and a few fun facts you might not know. Here are five things that make his story stand out:
 
1. He Was the First Indian in Space
On April 3, 1984, Rakesh Sharma made history by becoming the first Indian to travel to space. He flew aboard the Soviet Soyuz T-11 and spent almost eight days on the Salyut 7 space station with two Soviet cosmonauts.
 
2. He Was an Air Force Pilot First
Before his space adventure, Sharma was a decorated pilot in the Indian Air Force. He joined in 1970, flew MiG-21s during the 1971 war, and was already a test pilot when he was picked for the space mission.
 
3. Science and a Touch of India
While in space, Sharma conducted more than 40 experiments, including studies on yoga in zero gravity and remote sensing of India. He even took Indian food and a bit of soil from Rajghat with him.
 
4. That Famous Quote
When Prime Minister Indira Gandhi asked how India looked from space, Sharma replied, “Saare Jahan Se Accha.” That simple answer became legendary and is still remembered today.
 
5. A Hero at Home and Abroad
For his achievements, Sharma received the Ashok Chakra, India’s top peacetime bravery award, and was also honored by the Soviet Union. After retiring, he continued to work in aviation and remains a respected figure in India’s space story.
