India took control of the start of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy with 215/2 at tea on Day 1 of the opening Test against England at Headingley, Leeds. Yashasvi Jaiswal shone with a glittering hundred and new captain Shubman Gill steadied the innings with a smooth fifty, putting India in a commanding position after initial jitters.
Key Highlights:
• Yashasvi Jaiswal finished his fourth Test century, his hundred off a single and an innings full of panache and patience. His partnership with Gill was more than 100, soothing India after losing two wickets in rapid succession.
• India debut captain Shubman Gill was unbeaten on 58 at tea, displaying maturity and purpose in his maiden stint as captain.
• India lost debutant B Sai Sudharsan for a duck and KL Rahul for 39 in the morning session, but Gill and Jaiswal's fifth-wicket partnership ruled the day, adding 123 runs without losing any wicket in the afternoon session.
• England's bowlers, skippered by Ben Stokes and Brydon Carse, had no such pleasure once the early breakthroughs had been made with the pitch going soft in the sun.
Prospects: With two set batsmen and a deep batting lineup to come, India will hope to register a big first-innings total. England, meanwhile, will have to break the Gill-Pant stand in the early part of the final session to battle back into the match.
