Battle for the Skies: Ambani, Mittal Demand Fair Play in Satellite Licensing

In light of the government's plans to grant licenses for satellite operators such as Starlink, India's two telecom giants Mukesh Ambani and Sunil Mittal have made a demand for fair competition in the satellite communication sector. They called for similar spectrum pricing in a bid to avert market distortion, to state that satellite operators providing broadband services in urban areas must do so under a similar licensing and fee regime as terrestrial telecom operators. While the government prefers spectrum allocation by administrative means: conforming with the global standard; Ambani and Mittal have advocated for auctions to guarantee a level playing field in this burgeoning sector.
