There was much speculation about the budget of Anurag Basu's starry romantic drama Metro…. In Dino, whose budget was estimated by several reports to stand at an astronomical ₹85 crore. But industry sources and reports now establish that the film was made on a much smaller budget, laying the myth to rest about its box office performance.

Actual Budget:
A number of industry reports confirm Metro… In Dino was made for a ₹40 crore production budget and a further ₹7 crore for ad and print, for a total of ₹47 crore—precisely half the widely reported ₹85 crore.

Box Office Performance:
The film, which was released on July 4, 2025, has earned ₹29 crore net in India and ₹36.85 crore overseas in the opening week. Till Day 8, it earned another ₹2.25 crore, reaching close to the ₹30 crore.

Recovery Status:
With these collections, Metro… In Dino has recovered about 92% of its global cost of production, and about 70% of its total investment from the Indian box office alone. It has not yet broken even theatrical, but is very close, and OTT rights collection (Netflix) will help in cost recovery in entirety.

Cast and Plot:
The film stars Aditya Roy Kapur, Sara Ali Khan, Pankaj Tripathi, Konkona Sen Sharma, Ali Fazal, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Anupam Kher, and Neena Gupta. The film reveals the bittersweetness of relationships in modern-day Indian cities.

Market Challenges
While it was received positively and performed well in certain cities, the film was faced with strong competition from other Hollywood films and had ticket prices reduced to ₹99 to increase attendance.

Flop or sleeper hit
While there are some box office analysts quoting the ₹85 crore and predicting a loss, reality of the lower budget brings the film to the verge of breaking even and even a sleeper hit if the ancillary revenues are strong.

"Contrary to what many would have expected, Metro. In Dino was made on a relatively small budget of ₹40 crore for production and ₹7 crore for print and advertising. It's a film that bet not on numbers but on content and honesty." — Source close to the project
