The East and North City Corporations in Bengaluru have begun distributing ID cards to 6,600 street vendors under the Karnataka Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014. The initiative aims to streamline vending activities, ensure regulation, and provide legal recognition to vendors across identified zones.
In a significant step toward regulating and supporting street vendors, Bengaluru’s East and North City Corporations have initiated the distribution of ID cards to 6,600 vendors. The move is part of the Karnataka Street Vendors Act, 2014, which seeks to protect livelihoods while maintaining urban order.
A survey identified 2,157 vendors in East City limits, with 1,800 already receiving ID cards. Commissioner D.S. Ramesh symbolically distributed cards to 30 vendors and directed officials to complete the process through community resource persons. Authorities emphasized that vending zones will be jointly inspected by traffic police, corporation officials, and vendor associations to prevent congestion and ensure smooth operations.
This initiative provides vendors with formal recognition, enabling access to welfare schemes and reducing conflicts with enforcement agencies.
