The Uttar Pradesh government has begun drafting rules to protect and empower transgender persons, Social Welfare Minister Asim Arun informed the Assembly during the ongoing budget session. Responding to questions from legislators, Arun emphasized that the state is “fully sensitive and committed” to integrating the transgender community into the mainstream.
The rules, being framed under the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019, will be formally notified as the Uttar Pradesh Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Rules, 2026. The initiative focuses on providing identity cards through the National Portal for Transgender Persons, enabling easier access to welfare schemes and government services.
