Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the Chenab Railway Bridge, the world’s tallest railway bridge, standing 359 meters above the riverbed, making it 35 meters taller than the Eiffel Tower. This monumental structure is part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Link (USBRL), now fully operational, connecting the Kashmir Valley to the rest of India by rail for the first time.
The bridge, constructed at a cost of ₹1,486 crore, was built by Afcons Infrastructure Limited, with contributions from VSL India and South Korea’s Ultra Construction & Engineering Company. The Konkan Railway Corporation Limited supervised the project, ensuring its durability and resilience. Designed to withstand powerful earthquakes and wind speeds up to 266 km/h, the bridge has a projected lifespan of 120 years.
Experts believe this engineering feat will boost transport, trade, and economic growth in Jammu and Kashmir, marking a historic leap in India’s infrastructure development.
