Chennai’s Heatwave Takes a Rain Check: Showers Turn Up the Cool Factor

A short bout of heavy rain and thunderstorms brought relief from the hot weather in Chennai on Sunday. Heavy rain and strong winds lashed areas of the city like Ambattur, Avadi, Pozhichalur, Pallavaram, and Nungambakkam, bringing a welcome relief from the hot and humid weather of the last few days.
 
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has put out a rain warning for certain districts of Tamil Nadu on Monday, May 5. Heavy rain has been forecast in districts like Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Theni, and Dindigul, while thunderstorm with lightning and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph have been forecast for isolated places of Tamil Nadu, Karaikal, and Puducherry.
 
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also predicted steady day temperature declines in the state from May 4 to May 8, further reducing the heat. It will continue raining over Chennai and other districts, with warnings to Coimbatore, Madurai, Tiruchirappalli, Salem, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Karur, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Kancheepuram, and the Ghat belt.
 
The government has asked the public to stay updated with local weather alerts and be cautious, especially in waterlogging and traffic congestion areas.
